Management of Violence and Aggression
Aggression and Violence in the workplace whether physical or verbal can have a significant impact on us as individuals as well as upon the organisation. Many professionals face abusive behavior and dangerous situations at work every day. The employer has a duty to have a policy in place to deal with such situations and staff should receive training in how to deal with violence and aggression.
Course Outline
- Discuss the legislative framework governing safe workplace
- Define anger, aggression and violence and encourage participants to identify their understanding in a work shop and feed back to the large group.
- Identify and discuss the signs of impeding aggression and violence, in small groups, these groups then feed back to the large group.
- Discuss the assault cycle.
- Discuss de-escalation under the following headings:
- Assess oneself for therapeutic availability
- Assess the client and the situation
- Know the basics of verbal de-escalation (Bailey or Heron model).
- Posture and body language
- Time investment
- Environment and safety considerations
Breakaway techniques
The following techniques will be taught
- Wrist holds
- Hair pulling – front and back.
- Clothes grabs.
- Strangulations – front and back.
- Removing hand from door handle or cot side safely.
- Diversionary techniques.
- More can be added as required.
