Management of Violence and Aggression

Aggression and Violence in the workplace whether physical or verbal can have a significant impact on us as individuals as well as upon the organisation. Many professionals face abusive behavior and dangerous situations at work every day. The employer has a duty to have a policy in place to deal with such situations and staff should receive training in how to deal with violence and aggression.

Course Outline

  • Discuss the legislative framework governing safe workplace
  • Define anger, aggression and violence and encourage participants to identify their understanding in a work shop and feed back to the large group.
  • Identify and discuss the signs of impeding aggression and violence, in small groups, these groups then feed back to the large group.
  • Discuss the assault cycle.
  • Discuss de-escalation under the following headings:
    • Assess oneself for therapeutic availability
    • Assess the client and the situation
    • Know the basics of verbal de-escalation (Bailey or Heron model).
    • Posture and body language
    • Time investment
    • Environment and safety considerations

Breakaway techniques

The following techniques will be taught

  • Wrist holds
  • Hair pulling – front and back.
  • Clothes grabs.
  • Strangulations – front and back.
  • Removing hand from door handle or cot side safely.
  • Diversionary techniques.
  • More can be added as required.
